Commitment or Competence?
Commitment is better because I believe you can achieve anything if you set your heart to it. Skills can be learned but commitment is innate.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
Project flops due to internal factors. External factors which might destroy the plan can be overcome by fore sighting the event. Through this, projects can be better planned to prevent undesirable outcomes.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
For me, being a jack of all trades allows you to explore many things the world has to offer. It makes one a more balanced person who can handle any situation.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
I will remove a hopeless delinquent manager because if he shows that he is not interested in doing his job anymore. I will not force him to do something he doesn’t want and focus my efforts on managers who are dedicated in their tasks instead.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
New and risky is better because people get tired of the same thing if it is done over and over again without any improvements. New innovations keep people interested. As long as it is well planned, the risk involved will be reduced.
Ted Chua
Commitment or Competence?
I know I can get better results with a competent member, but commitment will make sure that the product of what we are doing is from genuine passion for the organization. Commitment is essential in actualizing what we believe in for the organization.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
Projects proposals have been checked by the president, evp, vp and avp. I believe these people are capable of editing the proposal and thinking of contingency measures. External factors I believe are the uncontrollable threats because these are unpredictable.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
We want to develop the members/managers holistically. By choosing specialized, I restrict their growths depending on their strengths. As much as possible, I want everyone to learn as much about everything.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
Once a person is hopeless, he/she must prove that we can still trust them with what we ask of them. Having delinquent managers would serve as liabilities. They are viruses that can poison the organization from the inside.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
No guts, no glory. No change means no growth. I believe a dynamic organization which changes according to what is required from them is the better organization
Trina Ong
Commitment or Competence?
My commitment to something activates my competence because competence alone, without the commitment, will only go to waste. With commitment, I am able to evoke competence and guarantee a follow through.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
Internal factors. As we all know, external factors are really uncontrollable so we just have to reflect on ourselves, prepare contingencies and improve on our follow-up skills to be able to keep up with the minimal changes due to the external factors.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
I choose to be a Jack of all trades minus the “a master of none” that follows because I am open to the idea of learning something new from others to enhance the skills I already have. In order to be effective, one must be able to adjust as time passes by. Look at it this way: as time passes by, a beeper technician can’t repair beepers his whole life because beepers, as we see now, are already obsolete.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
Normally, I’d say we demote the manager from officer-status to member-status but I think it is too morbid if we just remove the manager without knowing the reason behind him being delinquent. Tolerance however, is really out of the question because it indirectly implies that what the manager’s doing is just fine with me.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
So long as you face something with an open mind and try as much as possible to cover most of the bases, new and risky ideas, coupled with competence and commitment, will produce a great turnout.
Angela Lim
Commitment or Competence?
Commitment. It is in commitment when we become competent in the future. How else is one able to become competent if he does not set his heart on developing himself to the fullest? Competence is simply a result of someone committing himself in order to become more adept and proficient in life.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
External factors. In project management, there has to be minimal, if not no, room for error. Good leadership entails being meticulous about details that can be controlled, revised, and improved on. If a project flops due to external factors, it is not because the manager is incapable of managing, but because it is not within his grasp or control.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
Being a Jack of all Trades allows for flexibility and adaptability when faced with challenges. The problem with specialization is that you’re too focused on a certain aspect, which makes it difficult to adjust since other aspects for holistic formation have been neglected.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
Tolerate. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance. There’s always that little glimmer of hope to empower that delinquent manager once again. It’s all in the matter of tapping his/her potential and revive his/her interest in the job.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
New and risky ideas are often generated from tried and tested ones that weren’t that effective. Unlike tried and tested ideas that may result to stagnation, fresh ideas may pave the way for growth and development. Of course, there’s always that risk you have to take into consideration. Nevertheless, it’s important to weigh out your options before trying something new.
Retcher Ching
Commitment or Competence?
Commitment. Passion is more important than capability. What’s the use of being an expert on something when one does not have the heart for it? I find that someone who has the passion and puts a lot of effort into something because there is a gradual process of learning.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
Internal. Project flops due to internal factors are essential factors for the project managers to learn. External factors are very unpredictable at times, which is why there is very little room for learning and is not as effective as internal problems. Internal problems tell the managers what should and shouldn’t be done for future projects.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
Specialized. Having people who are specialized may be harder to coordinate but at least they know what they are doing best. Unlike having one member who is good at everything, having a project with specialized people in their own fields builds new relationships, new friendships, and camaraderie amongst one another.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
Remove. I am a very strict when it comes to people who enter a commitment. For me, one who does not help out after, let’s say, qualifying to be a manger is rendered useless. Why does one even bother to become a manger if he/she does not act it out?
Tried and tested or New and risky?
New and risky. Something innovative is always worth trying. One does not know if it may work or not but one learns a lot of things after implementing something that has never occurred before. At least, now, one knows what to do or what not to do
Vince Pena
Commitment or Competence?
Commitment. One thing that I have been taught to value is consistency because consistency is a sure sign of professionalism. In the real world, it is this quality that people want to see because it offers them a good sense of security. One very important factor that contributes to consistency is the commitment to whatever you are doing.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
Internal. For any project, it is always a given that there will be external factors or circumstances that will affect the success of the said project. It is how we face up to these challenges that ultimately determine whether or not the project becomes successful or not.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
For most cases I prefer the specialized because I know to certain degree what level of competency I can expect from them. I just won't ask them to do something that they are not good at in the first place.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
If the description is correct and (s)he really is hopeless then remove. Celadon has over 600 members, if one does not perform his or her duties; another one more willing should be given the chance to take on his or her responsibilities. The organization should not tolerate or, more importantly, force people into doing things that they do not want to do or cannot do in the first place.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
Tried and Tested. Again as I said, consistency is something that people (including myself) want to see, that means, something with a more predictable outcome.
Kenelynn Ng
Commitment or Competence?
When it comes to competence and commitment, I go for commitment. Commitment is the root of one’s diligence and persuasion. Individual commitment is what makes and drives a team to work, a company to work and a society to work best.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
External factors are easier for me to get by as opposed to dealing with internal problems because it destroys the strength of the org as a whole and loses the trust and confidence the members have for the org.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
I think being a Jack of all Trades serves one the advantage of being flexible and well-rounded. Specialization is great but to have knowledge in a wider range of abilities and skills creates a distinct edge.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
To me, there is no such thing as hopeless only passion-less. To me, members who are inactive and not participating at all should all the more be given attention to and properly motivated. I believe he/she only needs to find his defining moment to push him/her to be active.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
New and risky—“To be able to be successful, one must be courageous and risky,” John Gokongwei mentions in his speech. Higher risks entail higher returns. Without taking risks and trying something new, development and growth will grow stagnantly.
Bea Yao
Commitment or Competence?
Commitment. It’s better to have members to be committed for him to be able to concentrate and work his best rather to have someone competent but only have his attention divided.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
Project Flops due to External factors. I’d be more devastated if the problems are from the inside. The internal factors are the assets of an organization and it’s harder to mend the problems from within (For instance, officers stealing organization’s funds or from a co-officer).
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
Jack of all Trades. I like someone who’s well-rounded, I think it’s more practical nowadays.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
Hopeless delinquent manager: Remove. He might influenced a member and why bother keeping if he’s only causing problems?
Tried and tested or New and risky?
New and risky. I believe an organization should never be complacent. One must try new projects for the organization to prosper and for the members to gain experience.
Elfrida Tan
Commitment or Competence?
Commitment is more important than competency because a person’s competency can be developed; his commitment can’t. A person should first and foremost be willing to give himself to the organization before the organization can help him hone his skills to their utmost potential. If Celadon was simply filled with incredibly smart but uncommitted members, then there will be no members and ultimately, no organization to speak of.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
Project flops due to internal factors. The problems of a project are rooted from the planning and organizing of the managers, the dissemination of information, and the delegation of tasks to the members. If these aren’t addressed efficiently from the beginning of the project, it is sure to fail.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
Being specialized in just one thing hinders one from acquiring his ultimate potential. Someone has to be well-rounded in order to be an effective leader. This will help him handle different situations and find solutions for all sorts of problems that may come his way.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
Remove. I don’t believe that we can help him if he himself doesn’t want to be helped. His disappointing performance will only compromise the operations of the entire organization.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
I would probably go for tried and tested just because I’m afraid of making big mistakes that would compromise the position of the entire organization. Having said that, I also believe that Celadon needs new and risky projects to help her members grow. So even though I would opt for tried and tested, I would not forget to add a few twists to the project.
Eunice Tsai
Commitment or Competence?
Commitment: As long as the person is dedicated to what he or she is doing, he or she can find a way or ways in making it successful. This is different from a person who has the skills but doesn’t have the passion and doesn’t apply it.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
Project Flops due to external factors: Internal factors can be controlled as compared to external factors. I believe that there wouldn’t be project flops due to internal factors if everything were well planned and double-checked. External factors are often those beyond our control.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
Jack of all Trades: I believe that a person must be able to possess different skills in order to be prepared for different situations and challenges that may come along in life.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
Remove hopeless delinquent managers: Managers as leaders, serves as role models to members, and they’re the ones responsible for the success of the projects they’re handling. Having delinquent managers would not only result to unsuccessful projects but also demoralized members.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
New and risky: I believe that there is a need to try something that is new yet risky in order to have improvements in the organization, since doing what is tried and tested would only maintain the status quo.
Adrienne Gopoco
Commitment or Competence?
Competence is more important than commitment. A person need not be present in every project to be considered a good leader. If he/she can handle his/her responsibilities well then that’s what matters the most.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
I would credit a project’s flop due to external factors. I believe that preparations are always made to anticipate any foreseen possible problems. Should a problem occur, it would most likely be because of outside incidents.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
In this era where diversity is prevalent, possessing knowledge on various areas is a must. Being a jack of all trades is more useful as opposed to specializing in only one field.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
Given a delinquent manager whose performance has been beyond sub-par even after repeated reminders, I would opt to let this manager go. His/her performance has an effect on his/her project, his/her fellow managers, his/her flock and project members, and consequently the entire department. As a manager, he/she is aware of his/her responsibilities and if he/she does not live up to them, then relieving him/her of these responsibilities would be my course of action.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
I would opt to try something new and risky. Because of rapid advancements in many areas of interest, pushing for innovation would inject new creativity into an otherwise regular situation.
Jeraldine Tan
Commitment or Competence?
Commitment: To be committed signals ones willingness and belief on the vision of the project. This is more valuable than competence for competence could be acquired through learning and experience while the commitment requires a giving of one's self and time on the task at hand. There may be a lot of competent people in the organization but without their commitment, their competence will lie stagnant and futile.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
Project Flops due to Internal Factors: External factors are admittedly a big component of a projects success but unfortunately, it is out of the organizer's control. Hence, a project's failure can be greatly attributed to internal factors since these are the details that the organizers have complete control over and therefore, can be planned to respond to glitches that external factors may bring. A failure to plan is a plan for failure.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
Jack of all Trades: Flexibility is an important characteristic of a leader. Although mastery of an area is important as well, limiting yourself to your specialty would hinder growth. It would be most productive to attain a certain level of mastery but not to the extent of being close-minded on taking on new tasks.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
Remove Hopeless Delinquent Manager: Assuming from the given parameters, hopeless would mean previous action was done to correct this manager's behavior but to no avail. Hence, it would be but fair to all the members to remove have this manager removed and replaced by a more disciplined leader. It is a manager's responsibility to give the best service to his or her peers.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
New and risky: Reinvention is vital in keeping members interested in the organization's activities. Although errors can be expected of any new endeavor, this should be able create a challenge for upcoming members as something to work on and eventually perfect. Hence, we should not be afraid to come up with new projects inclined to foster the growth of the organization bringing the members with it.
Roverne Chiusinco
Commitment or Competence?
Commitment is actually what drives a person to exert a certain level of competency in his field of work. If you love your job and are devoted to it, the effort you put to produce the best possible outcome just comes naturally.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
A project has to be well planned in every aspect, ahead of time and with the necessary contingencies. If proper planning is coupled with proper execution, there would be a smoother flow of things. Even if external factors would pose a threat, the project has back-up plans to solve their problems.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
I once tried to be the Jack-of-all-trades (Academics, Table Tennis Varsity, Sanggunian and Celadon) but I learned that I am not the type of person who can do well in every field all at the same time. Now, I choose to focus on one, get to know it inside-out and give it my best. It’s better to do really well in one thing rather than present a “half-cooked” performance for a variety
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
In a case of delinquency, the first best thing to do is to actually talk with the person involved, let him know of what you think and try to understand his side of things. If and when this delinquent person is no longer interested to fulfill his duties, then he should be replaced with another who is more willing. However, we should also make sure that both parties are clear about the reasons for the removal so as not to cause problems.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
My working style is to stick to the “tried and tested” systems, which will lay the working foundations, and later try on “new and risky” options that will push for further development. Actually, I believe that we need a mix of both.
Ivan Caw
Commitment or Competence?
I would definitely choose commitment. If you are committed in doing something, then you will do all that it takes to accomplish it even if it means sleepless nights. Along the way, you get to learn new things and take on new challenges.
Project Flops due to Internal or External factors?
Definitely, project flops due to internal factors. It is the internal factor which we can actually control or monitor therefore at the very least it has to be implemented properly.
Specialized or Jack of all Trades?
I would prefer Jack of all Trades rather than Specialized. When you’re Jack of all Trades, you know to a substantial degree a lot of skills or things, and being such you can see the bigger picture better, which is important in being a leader.
Hopeless delinquent manager: Tolerate or Remove?
Hopeless delinquent manager: Remove. There are many other people who are just as skilled and with more dedication who can replace the delinquent manager however the delinquent manager can come back again if he/she is ready to be part of the HR team.
Tried and tested or New and risky?
I would choose New and Risky. For me, being a leader requires risks in order to come up with innovative ideas in order to strengthen and challenge the HR department. The only thing permanent is change, in this case a dynamic change.
